FIRST LIGHT

They get up at first light each morning to wash and feed their steer.
It has to be rinsed many times a day to grow hair this time of year.
They blow him dry and feed him in the early morning cool.
They've been doing this for many weeks, even before they got out of school.
Some people don't understand this life style; they think it's kind of funny.
But folks who show livestock know there are more important things than money.
Some families pay two thousand for a steer and sell him for a thousand in the fall.
Other families pay two thousand for a lawyer after the police make a late night call.
It's about physical work and responsibility; it's not about profit and loss.
It's about raising the next generation to be a better employee or boss.
It's about working together and bonding between a parent and child.
It's about giving a kid an opportunity instead of on the streets running wild.
Payday isn't just after the show; payday is the rest of their life.
Each kid is learning to be a good person---a good parent, a good husband, a good wife.
